Steve Philbrook -  Watercolor Artist

Steve Philbrook was born in Boston, Massachusetts and grew up in New England.
Steve started painting after a successful career as a golf professional, most of which was spent in Florida and he Northeast. His father was an avid watercolor artist, late in life Steve’s Dad developed Alzheimer’s. With no previous interest in painting, Steve started painting with his Dad just to spend time with him and keep him active and engaged. After his Dad passed away, Steve continued painting daily in Maine in the summer and in Florida during the winter months.
He is self-taught, learning from famous artist such as Winslow Homer, and Andrew Wyeth and contemporary artist Liam Zhen, Don Andrews, Tom Shepherd and Ellen Negley.
As an avid fly fisherman, many of his paintings are reflections of a passion for the outdoors and the time spent on the water fly fishing. When selecting subjects he tries to search for something striking that suggests the natural movement of his subject. With his uniquely styled wildlife paintings, he strives to paint the expressive attitude of the subject. Philbrook hopes that by accentuating those things that are important in creating “attitude” he can motivate the viewers to ... “feeling the painting, not just see the painting”… "I try to bring to the viewer a little realism along with some creativity and exaggeration.”
Steve’s passion to paint not only includes wildlife but a variety of subjects, highlighted by expressive fishing scenes, and landscapes. His paintings seem to bring the animals and landscapes somewhere between impressionism and what nature naturally provides.
Philbrook ties many of his own flies, most of his fish paintings include one of his “real flies”. All of his framed paintings are framed in wood which he makes from old barn boards and other weathered wood.
His paintings are part of private collections all along the east coast, from Maine to Florida and in Hungary, Germany, Spain and England.
